As projected 2010 had another music sales decline. This was driven by illegal downloads and peer-to-peer sharing.
The music industry was provided with one bright spot in 2010, from Rap. The genre which has in the past been driven by illegal downloads and mixtapes showed a 3% increase in 2010 reaching total sales of 27.3 million units. 3% increase in album sales is not something to brag about, but in a year where CD sales were down more than 20% it was a pleasant suprise to industry execs. Rap album sales have been on decline since 2005 where they sold 75.1 million units.
The genre was the home of the year’s top-selling album Eminem’s Recovery. The album, which was Eminem’s seventh sold 3.415 million copies. The other top rap sellers came from Drake’s Thank Me Later which sold 1.27 million copies. Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Lil Wayne’s Rebirth and I Am Not A Human Being each pushed more than 650,000 copies this year.
Another bright spot for the genre came from newcomer Nicki Minaj who sold nearly 400,000 copies of her album Pink Friday in November. The album has since been certified platnium.
This is really great! Congrats!
What do you think? What albums did you buy in 2010?
According to this week’s sales figures American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox has eclipsed winner Lee DeWyze in album sales this week. Crystal released her debut Farmer’s Daughter on Dec. 14, while DeWyze released Live it Up on Nov. 16. Ouch!
Crystal outsold Lee in their intial frame on the chart selling 58k and 19k respectively. Lee’s on the other hand debuted at a higher position, #19; Crystal debuted at #28.
This week Crystal’s cumlitave sales reach 104k surpassing Lee’s total of 102k. Do not get too excited though. Last year’s runner-up Adam Lambert sold 198k in his first week on the charts. It looks as though Idol will really need to produce a superstar this year in order to stay relevant.
What do you think? Did you buy Crystal’s album or Lee’s?
The hottest female-MC of the 2010s has the stats back up her title. Her debut Pink Friday has already gone platnium, and it has only been released for six weeks! Thats incredible! The diva has one of eighteen albums to sell at least one million copies in 2010.
For those keeping a tally, Minaj has outsold Kanye West (whose albums were released the same week), who only defeated the Queen of Rap in their first week on the charts together.
Taylor Swift will rule the Billboard 200 yet again this week according to projections from Hits Daily Double. The chart (which will be released offically tomorrow) says Swift will top the charts with her album Speak Now which sold nearly 75k units.
Eminem, who was rumored to lead the charts this week, will come in at #2 with 66k. Not far after that Rihanna will check in to #3 with Loud selling 65k. In Loud‘s premiere week on the charts it debuted at #3. Not far behind are Kanye West and Nicki Minaj who are both expected to sell around 62k, HDD has Kanye leading by 700 units, but they will be close.
This year is the one-year anniversary of Susan Boyle’s final week atop the charts with her album I Dreamed A Dream before Ke$ha knocked it out of the top spot with Animal. This week, Ke$ha is at #17 with Cannibal (30k) and Susan Boyle is at #39 with The Gift (15k)
Not bad for after Christmas sales? What CD Did U Pick Up This Week?
Eminem’s seventh studio album Recovery first topped the Billboard 200 in June, but it seems it may top the charts yet again. Hits DailyDouble is reporting that next weeks charts will be a toss-up between Eminem and current chart superior Taylor Swift. Neither of the releases for these album occured in December or November which shows that 2010 was owned by a few Blockbuster albums rather than many that sold above-average.
Next week’s album charts will be driven by iTunes and other music stores giftcards. The teen market will be in demand, so it is projected that Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Kanye West will occupy spots #3-5 on the albums charts; Bruno Mars and Katy Perry are also expected to rank in high positions.
What do you think? What did you buy with your giftcards?
Taylor Swift is atop the Billboard 200 this week after sales of her new album Speak Now were at 277,000 an increase from last weeks sales.
Although most industry executives may attribute the increase in sales to last minute Christmas shopping, it may have to do with the amount of MP3 players and iTunes giftcards found under the tree.
Susan Boyle’s The Gift was at No. 2 and Glee’s The Christmas Album was at No. 3.
Jamie Foxx’s The Best Night of My Life was the highest new release of the week; it debuted at No. 6.
Later on the list was Keyisha Cole’s Calling All Hearts which debuted at No. 9 with 128k albums sold, and Keri Hilson who opened at No. 11 with 104k copies of her new album No Boys Allowed.
Those are good numbers for Hilson whose last album opened with 96k.
Thoughts on this week’s charts?
Lady Gaga had 2010s top-selling album internationally with The Fame Monster. The eight track EP which was released in November 2009 sold over 5.8 million copies worldwide. WOW!
Also appearing in the top 10 are Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, Susan Boyle and Alica Keys.
Take That, Rihanna, Florence and the Machine, and Ke$ha were in the Top 40:
