Grammy Predictions – Pop Categories

This year more than ever the Grammy’s went pop. Which makes this genré the most important of them all and will prove as the descision point for the Big Four categories. See what we pick, and comment below, who do you think will take home the pop trophies?

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance

▪ “King of Anything” – Sara Bareilles
▪ “Halo” (Live) – Beyoncé
▪ “Chasing Pirates” – Norah Jones
▪ “Bad Romance” – Lady Gaga
▪ “Teenage Dream” – Katy Perry

ANALYSIS:

Of the pop categories, this one had the weakest selection of all. Beyoncé’s Halo should not be eligible as it won this category last year, and Chasing Pirates is an obscure song both lyrically and melodically and failed to crack any pop chart this year. And isn’t that what Pop music stands for? Popular. On the contrary the other three nominees are all perfect picks for this year; King is a simple traditional pop song, Romance is a high production smash hit, and Teenage Dream is a fun, summer, song (and this is one of the few categories where that is acceptable).

OUR FAVORITE:

Teenage Dream by Katy Perry has great production and a killer dance beat, perfect for a pop song.

OUR PICK:

Bad Romance was the biggest snub in both Record and Single of the Year the academy will likely award Gaga for her groundbreaking, heavy synth tune.

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance

▪ “Haven’t Met You Yet” – Michael Bublé
▪ “This Is It” – Michael Jackson
▪ “Whataya Want from Me” – Adam Lambert
▪ “Just the Way You Are” – Bruno Mars
▪ “Half of My Heart” – John Mayer

Rihanna and Drake Reherse for Grammy’s

One of the highest anticipated performances for 2011’s Grammy Ceremony is Rihanna and Drake’s first live performance of their #1 hit What’s My Name. Rihanna recieved five Grammy nominations including “Record of the Year” and “Album of the Year”, while Drake recieved four thanks to his multi-platnium album Thank Me Later.

The performance nearly came to end because Rihanna has been suffering from bronchitis this weeks, but the Barbadian superstar assures that the show will go on.

Catch this video below of a rehersal for their performance, the video also features seven time nominee Bruno Mars talking about his Grammy experience.

Katy Returns to the Top of the Billboard Hot 100

After taking a week off letting Bruno Mars stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 Katy Perry’s Firework returns to the top. This is the fourth non-consecutive week this song has been atop the chart. Last year, Perry stayed at #1 for 6 weeks with California Gurls and an additional 2 weeks with Teenage Dream.

Last week’s chart victor Bruno Mars’s Grenade fell to #2 on the chart, and Ke$ha’s We R Who We R hung on to #3.

At last night’s People’s Choice Awards Katy Perry picked up the awards for “Favorite Female Singer” and “Favorite Web Celeb”

Congrats!

People’s Choice Awards Predictions!

This wednesday (Jan. 5) are the 37th Annual People’s Choice Awards. Queen Latifah is hosting the CBS aired event, and although the event may not make a huge impact on pop-culture it is a representation of what people think about artists in the industry. This early in the year it is important to tell where people’s minds are when it comes to purchasing music, and this is one of the few shows in which (obviously) the viewers vote.

We listed who we think will win, and we also listed who should win. Just for kicks who we voted for.

Favorite Song

Nominees:

  • Airplanes by B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams
  • California Gurls by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg
  • Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuringRihanna
  • OMG, by Usher featuring will.i.am
  • Telephone by Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé

Predictions:

Should Win: California Gurls by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg
Will Win: California Gurls by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg
Voted For: Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna

Analysis:

First, lets note how music has changed because throughout the decade, all of these songs are collaborations, not a single solo act. The biggest song of this year was Ke$ha’s Tik Tok, but if that song is out of the way Katy Perry is a close #2. We voted for Love the Way You Lie because lyrically that song is FAR superior to any other in that category.

Eminem To Top This Weeks Billboard Charts!

Eminem’s seventh studio album Recovery first topped the Billboard 200 in June, but it seems it may top the charts yet again. Hits DailyDouble is reporting that next weeks charts will be a toss-up between Eminem and current chart superior Taylor Swift. Neither of the releases for these album occured in December or November which shows that 2010 was owned by a few Blockbuster albums rather than many that sold above-average.

Next week’s album charts will be driven by iTunes and other music stores giftcards. The teen market will be in demand, so it is projected that Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Kanye West will occupy spots #3-5 on the albums charts; Bruno Mars and Katy Perry are also expected to rank in high positions.

What do you think? What did you buy with your giftcards?

Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” Explodes atop Hot 100

When the Billboard Hot 100 is released tomorrow Bruno Mars will be the leader of the chart with his song Grenade. This will be Mars’ third visit to the top of the chart in his very short career. He topped the chart earlier this year with Just the Way You Are and his B.o.B. collaboration Nothin’ on You.
Mars will knock Katy Perry’s Firework out of the top spot after three weeks there.
Mars made headlines earlier this month after receiving 7 Grammy nomination, second only to Eminem.

Bruno Mars in Hawaii

Bruno Mars was spotted in Hawaii wearing perhaps the ugliest shirt on the face of the Earth.

His song grenade is currently #1 on iTunes. When asked about the song Mars said that at first everyone thought it was about Jersey Shore.

LOL!

What do you think? Are you a fan of Mars? Grenade? His Shirt?

Eminem Tops UK Singles Chart

The UK’s top 40 selling singles of 2010 was recently released and Eminem and Rihanna topped the chart with Love the Way You Lie. Eminem should send Rihanna a thank you note or something.

It is not Rihanna’s only top ten hit, she’s at #9 with Only Girl.

The interesting thing? Lie never reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. Interesting.

Another thing, until you reach #6 all of the songs on the chart are by American artists. Seems like the Brits are pretty in sync with us blue coats.

Here’s the top ten list:

1. Eminem feat. Rihanna, “Love The Way You Lie”
2. Bruno Mars, “Just the Way You Are”
3. Usher feat. will.i.am, OMG
4. Owl City, “Fireflies”
5. B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams, “Airplanes”
6. Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg, “California Gurls”
7. Yolanda Be Cool vs. DCUP, “We No Speak Americano”
8. Helping Haiti, “Everybody Hurts”
9. Rihanna, “Only Girl (In The World)”
10. Tinie Tempah, “Pass Out”

Bruno Mars – 10 Game Changing Artist of 2010

In 2010 Bruno Mars made the genre singer/songwriter even stronger. Not only did he sing on hits such as Nothin’ On You and Billionare, but the R&B singer co-wrote this year’s megahit (Expletive) You by Cee-Lo Green. Mars then released his debut album Doo-Wops and Hooligans filled with smoot R&B ballads such as the irresistable Just the Way You Are and the powerful Grenade.

Mars made headlines earlier in September after he was caught snorting cocaine at a Vegas nightclub, but a court date has yet to be set.

Mars was nominated for 8 Grammy nominations, and his album was uneligable proving that great things are to come for the singer.

Bruno Mars, 2010 would not have been the same without you.
